The Art Wing

In 2002, the Mental Health Association Art Wing was established to promote the value and talent of individuals recovering from mental illness through expressive arts. The promise, potential and creativity in every individual has the right to be celebrated.

The requirement for submitting a piece of art is that it simply must be a form of art that has been or is currently essential in the recovery process. The Art Wing is a stepping stone for talented consumers to show their art and build the confidence necessary to try other endeavors in the community. The Art Wing, consumers and their case managers work collaboratively to establish relationships with art galleries in the community to further opportunities to display and even sell art. For many consumers, the most inspiring part of sharing their art is the validation they get when other people relate to and admire what they have created.

The gallery is unique in that with the purchase of a print, painting or other artwork, 100% of the profit goes directly to the artist. It is our hope that this will help these talented individuals continue in their pursuits of becoming gainfully employed as artists.

Goals/Objectives
The ultimate goal of the Art Wing is to empower and encourage consumers to utililize their talents and strengths as a means of becoming gainfully employed. There are varying levels of risk the consumers are willing to take depending on where they are in their recovery process. While some consumers are just getting up the courage to display their works, others are now beginning to seek out galleries and potential employment opportunities. It is also our goal to establish relationships/partnerships with community organizations, foster community awareness and education regarding severe and persistent mental illness and the programs of the Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas.
